Packing, unfortunately, is not just about placing your belongings into boxes and containers. It's an art that requires careful planning, organization, and strategy to ensure a smooth transition from your old home to new one. Safe and efficient packing minimizes the risk of damage to your treasured items and reduces the hassle on moving day.

In this guide titled "Packing 101: Best Practices for Safeguarding Your Belongings", we reveal a host of practical tips and strategies to help you pack your belongings in a way that guarantees their safe transportation. Regardless of whether you're a first-time mover that's hired a Connecticut moving company or a seasoned nomad, these best practices promise to transform your moving experience into a hassle-free, efficient process that you can navigate with confidence.

Our Basic Packing 101 Guide

packing for a move in Connecticut

1. Start with the Right Supplies

Before you start wrapping and boxing, gather high-quality packing materials. This includes sturdy boxes, bubble wrap, packing paper, heavy-duty tape, and markers. Investing in the right materials from the outset is essential. Remember, cardboard boxes can vary in quality, so opt for those that are designed for moving and storage. CT moving and storage experts often suggest double-walled boxes for heavier items.

2. Categorize and Declutter

Before you even think about packing, categorize your belongings. Separate items you use daily from those you use less frequently. This is also the perfect time to declutter. Donate or sell items you no longer need or want. Not only does this reduce the volume of items you'll need to pack, but it also means less to unpack in your new home.

3. Protect Fragile Items

Fragile items require extra attention. Use bubble wrap, packing paper, or old newspapers to wrap each item individually. For dishes and glassware, consider purchasing dish packs or cell kits, which offer compartments for added protection. Don’t skimp on padding at the bottom, sides, and top of boxes. And always remember to mark these boxes as ‘FRAGILE’ in bold letters.

4. Heavy Items Need Special Care

While it might seem logical to pack all your books into one box, it's a recipe for disaster. Not only will it be too heavy to lift, but the box might also give out from the weight. Instead, use smaller boxes for heavy items like books and tools. Spread the weight across multiple containers and make sure no box is too heavy for one person to handle comfortably.

5. Make Use of Original Packaging

For electronics and appliances, the original packaging is usually the best. These boxes were designed to transport these items safely. If you’ve held onto them, now’s the time to use them. If not, use plenty of padding and ensure that these items are snug within their boxes to avoid movement.

6. Consider the Unpacking Process

As you pack, think about the unpacking process. It can be beneficial to group items from the same room together. Clearly label each box with its contents and the room it's destined for. This practice will make the unpacking process much smoother and more organized.

7. Seal and Secure Every Box

Ensure that each box is securely sealed with heavy-duty packing tape. This not only keeps your items safe but also prevents unwanted pests or dirt from getting inside during the move. Check the bottom of old or reused boxes for any signs of wear and reinforce them if necessary.

8. Special Items Require Special Attention

Some items, like artwork, musical instruments, or antiques, might require custom crates or special boxes. Connecticut moving companies often offer specialized packing services for these items. Don’t hesitate to ask for their expertise when it comes to these precious belongings.

9. Keep Essentials Accessible

Pack a separate box or bag with essentials you’ll need immediately after the move. This might include toiletries, a change of clothes, important documents, medications, and chargers. Keep this box with you or ensure it’s the last one loaded onto the truck, making it the first off.

10. Seek Expert Help When Needed

No matter how many DIY moving videos you watch, some things are best left to the professionals.
